Romans 8:14
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God”
You know those nights where you’re just sat in your room and you’re just thinking? Physically you’re not doing much, but mentally you’re going overtime. Well, that’s what happened to me a couple of days ago. Thinking about a lot, one of those thoughts was examining my life. I looked at all the things that made me, me. I started to match my life to Jesus, to see if there was a comparison, and I could pick very little things. I saw how unforgiving I was in certain situations, I saw how I didn’t use kindness in that interaction, all things I wasn’t proud of. In times like this, it’s very easy to be disappointed in yourself and hang your head down, but I think in all our lives, we can use this as an opportunity for change.
When was the last time you looked in the mirror? What did you see? The things that we see are most likely vain: maybe it’s the way our hair looks, or the colour of our eyes, but what does God see when He looks at us? Does He see a reflection of His son, or something else?
Your reflection bears more than a mere glass that shows you your physical attributes: your reflection shows you your heart. Our hearts need to be consecrated to be like Jesus.
In simple terms, consecration means to set ourselves apart. Though our bodies coexist in this world, our lives are not. Setting ourselves apart means going against the norm of what the world tells us to do. In this world, we are told what and what not to say, who we are, how to essentially live our lives. But consecration means matching our lives to the essence of holiness, so when look in the mirror, we see the resemblance of Jesus, not the world.
Ever heard of the phrase, ‘like father like son’? Have you ever seen a father and a son together and see how similar they are: sharing the same characteristics, probably having the same walk, maybe even talking the same. In some capacity, I think this is the desire of God for our lives. When looking at the verse, we see we need to be living lives that “are led by the spirit of God”. Why? So that we can share in Jesus’s sonship. We need to live lives that are a reflection of the life Jesus lived. What we say, how we treat people, they are all components of a life that is led by the spirit.
