Romans 12:2
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”
The title of this blog today isn’t merely a metaphoric statement but a reality. The heaviest weights aren’t found in the gym; it’s found in our minds.
At some capacity, Overthinking seems to impact everyone. I think it’s an important thing to discuss. It feels like as society is expanding, and technology is improving; it’s also having a reverse effect on our mental health. With so much fixing and innovation, our minds are the last thing we ever consider improving. The reason why I say “weights” is because what we carry in our minds are heavy. For me, it was fulfilling expectations, fear of failure and what other people thought about me: all things that felt way too heavy. Some of us carry more weight than others, but weight is unique in the fact that however strong you are, the more time you spend carrying it, the heavier it gets.
Picture the strongest person you know, let’s imagine that person is carrying a 5kg weight. Probably easy right? Well let’s imagine that person holding that same weight for an hour, it’s more likely to feel heavier than before. But the weight didn’t change, it was only the time spent holding it.
Overthinking is the same: we may think that we are strong enough to carry the burdens in our minds, but after a while, if we’re not careful, like weights, everything can come crumbling down and drop. Overthinking is simply when your minds are doing more than it should be doing. What should it be doing? If we look at the verse, Paul encourages us to have a renewal of our minds. I think that suggests that our minds aren’t where it should be, but God desires us to not only reject the customs of this world’s overthinking but be renewed by His peace.
Through this verse, God gives us a picture of how our minds should be constructed. He wants our minds to be “good and acceptable and perfect”, all components that can’t be achieved by us alone. In fact, all these components are characteristics of God, so to produce these things in our minds, it takes a full surrendering for God to govern them.
Our minds are more important than you think. The Bible teaches us that our heart, minds and souls are interconnected, not singular parts but rather a unity. What that means is that if one crumbles, it causes a direct correlation to the other two. So, let us drop the weight of overthinking, and let God grant us a “peace that surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7)
The heaviest weights are found in our minds however we serve a God who cannot only carry the weight but also isn’t limited to time.
