The weights that are called “Overthinking”

Romans 12:2   “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”   The title of this blog today isn’t merely a metaphoric statement but a reality. The heaviest weights aren’t found in the gym; it’s found in our minds.   At some capacity , Overthinking seems to impact everyone. I think it’s an important thing to discuss. It feels like as society is expanding, and technology is improving; it’s also having a reverse effect on our mental health. With so much fixing and innovation, our minds are the last thing we ever consider improving. The reason why I say “weights” is because what we carry in our minds are heavy . For me, it was fulfilling expectations, fear of failure and what other people thought about me: all things that felt way too heavy. Some of us carry more weight than others, but weight is unique in the fact that however...

The Fall vs The Rise

Romans 6:4   “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glo ry of the Father, we too may live a new life”   Given the theme of Easter, I think it’s important to re member why we celebrate this holiday and what specifically was done on a cross 2,000 odd years ago in a place called Golgotha. Easter isn’t merely a time of stuffing your face with chocolates but a reflection: a reflection to highlight how humanity’s failure points to Jesus’s correction.   Before we look at the verse, I think it’s important to see where it all went wrong. If you aren’t aware of the story, let me give you a quick run through of what is known as ‘The Fall ’. Genisis 1:26-27 tells us that we were made in the image and likeness of God, creating a unique relationship that separated humanity from any other creation of God. This un ique relationship was inhabited in ‘The Garden of Eden’: the same place wher...

Pressure doesn’t make diamonds it points to it

Psalm 118: 5-6   “ Out of my distress I called on the  Lord ; the  Lord  answered me and set me free. The  Lord  is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”   I never understood the phrase ‘pressure makes diamonds’: obviously I understood the context, however I could never relate to it. The phrase suggests that press ure is something to be embraced or celebrated because something good was going to come out of it, but in my life, it was never the case. Every form of pressure that approached me seemed to lead to disappointment. With every exam I put pre ssure on myself for, were the ones I did the worst on. With every basketball game I put pressure on myself for, were the ones I played the worst. It was an unescapable loop .     I’m not saying every pressure leads to disappointment, but pressure that is relied on your strength will eventually catch up to you. Our pressure doesn’t make diamonds, it points to our diamond: our tre...

This baggage called life...

Matthew 11: 28-30   “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”   One thing that I’ve realised in these last couple of months is that life happens. I’ve seen ‘life’ happen to those around me, and I’ve seen ‘life’ happen to myself. When I say life, I don’t merely mean the act of living or the breath in your lungs, but rather everything you experience outside of that. ‘ Life ’ could be synonymous to that pro blem your facing, or that circumstance that you're in. ‘ Life ’ is a common thing that we all share, and if you’ve lived long enough it’s likely you faced a problem that you carried. M aybe you are carrying that problem right now, but I want to remind you that someone is there to carry it for you.   Looking at the verse, there’s a couple of things to learn. We see tha t...
