Unpacking Genisis 1

There are a lot of things to unpack within the book of Genisis : there’s compassion, wrath and greed, and that’s only within the first couple of pages. If we were to go into intricate detail, it would take days to fully comprehend the intention behind the book. But today, I wanted to highlight three points, only a fraction of how God’s character is explored within Genisis 1.     1. God calls for the separation between light and darkness     Genisis 1:4   “God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness ” .   During God’s creation, he came to a realisation. He realised that they should be a seperation: a permanent division between light and darkness. We can view this verse through a scientific perspective, but Jesus us es this same term in the New Testament. Jesus calls us to be the light of the world ( Matthew 5:14) meaning anything ‘dark ’ in our life should be separated from us. This darkness could be bad friendships, m...

Whose voice are we giving the microphone to?

John 6:19-20 “When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.  But he said to them, It is I; don’t be afraid” Throughout the years, overthinking has been a constant theme in my life.  Fear, doubt, anxiety. These are all things I’ve experienced and things I still experience, and I never knew how to deal with it.  I would talk to other people, try to get certain advice, but it never truly helped.  Prayer at times wasn’t even a solution, because although I was talking to God, I didn’t give him a chance to talk back. Communicating with God has never been easy for me, mainly because practically I wasn’t sure how God communicated.  As funny as it may sound, I thought God would only speak through an audible voice in the sky.  I set that as an expectation, and when that didn’t happen, I assumed God was staying silent. You see, God is very...

Embracing our Weaknesses

2 Corinthians 12:9   “But he said to me, my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me”   Recently I had a friend point out one of my flaws, and if I’m being honest, it affected me. I spent the rest of that day in a cloud of thoughts, not bothering to read my bible or pray, all over one little comment my friend said. Now this may sound overdramatic, but if you couldn’t tell by now, I’m a very self-critical person. I don’t like being wrong, I over-analyse all my mistakes and avoid taking risks because of the fear of failure .      Being corrected is an uncomfortable feeling, it’s even more uncomfortable when your flaws are revealed to you. It may sound odd, but God wants us to see our own weaknesses. He wants us to recognise all of our insecurities and imperfections, not to make us feel bad, but for further glory to be given to...

Being ‘Still’ for God

Psalm 46:10   “Be still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth”   Throughout this year I’ve gone through periods of time where I have been worried and stressed. Whether it’s being broke , stressing about schoolwork, or simply how I will be perceived by others, I always found a way for my mind to run a thousand places. This mental workload clearly wasn’t healthy, and often times I found myself overwhelmed, isolated and hopeless. God doesn’t desire this life for us, in fact he wants the complete opposite .    From the verse above, God requires us to be ‘still ’. And when God says ‘still’ he doesn’t mean a physical stillness, he doesn’t want you to be motionless. Instead, he is asking for a mental stillness: a state of tranquillity and peace .    If we dig into the Hebrew origin of being ‘still ’, it gives words like ‘relax ’, ‘let go’ and ‘stop ’. All these words insinuate a form of surrendering...
