Locating our Faith

Luke 8:25   “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples . In fear and amazement, they asked one another, who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him”   If this is your first time reading this verse, let me give you a brief summary of what is going on. Jesus and his disciples are on a boat, and a storm comes . It’s cold, probably raining and the disciples think they are most likely going to die. All while this is happening Jesus is sleeping , and is woken up by the stress, worry and anxiety of his disciples.   There’s a couple of things to draw from this story , but today, I’m going to highlight the first four words of the verse “Where is your faith? ”. I find it interesting that Jesus asked a question in a time of crisis , rather than showing empathy, like he did in previous situa tions. You see, Jesus already knew the answer to the question, instead his purpose for asking it was for the disciples to self-examine themselves. ...

Who does God say he is?

Exodus 3:14   “God said to Moses, I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites. I am has sent me to you”   The title of this isn’t a rhetorical question. For us, we call God different things. We speak different languages , have had different circumstances, and may refer to God differently. Whether it is “ Almighty” ( Revelation 1:8) or “Alpha and Omega” ( Revelation 22:13) , God is multifaceted in his title. Today , I want to highlight one of those names. From the verse we see God refers to himself as “I am who I am ”. This is the first time in the b ible where God refers to himself by a specific name. Prior to this moment, the Israelites called God “Elohim ” or “El Shaddai” which is more of a title rather than a personal name and loosely translates to “God Almighty ”. They called ...

Uniqueness through Comparison

Galatians 1: 10   “ Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I t rying to please people? If I were still trying to please people , I would not be a servant of Christ”   In a world where there is so many different o pinions o n how you should act or behave, we see certain people, certain lifestyles and try to emulate and copy the way they walk and talk. But when we compare ourselves to Jesus, we set ourselves a part from this world.   There is nothing wrong with wanting material things: we might see a particular car someone has and wa nt that, or wear particular clothes , but we have to ask a question: do we want these things as simply materialistic things? Or are we wanting these things to seek the approvals of oth ers. If in the act of wanting those things makes us feel in adequate , insecure and less of, then it becomes problematic. I believe there is a innate desire to want better, to live better. I believe that sense of hope was ...
